VUCC Safe Church Policy

Approved by Council August 17, 2022

As a community of Christian faith, the Veradale United Church of Christ (VUCC), is committed to offering and maintaining programs, facilities, and a community in which employees, volunteers and congregants can feel safe from all forms of discrimination, harassment, exploitation, or intimidation. All persons associated with the VUCC should be aware that the church is strongly opposed to exploitation, abuse, and harassment and that such behavior is prohibited by the VUCC policy. It is the intention of this policy to prevent such behavior and protect the VUCC congregants.

Conduct of Employees and Volunteers

It is important that all the VUCC employees and volunteers nurture safety by being attentive to self-care, education, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and referring those in need to supportive and helpful services. Sexual exploitation or harassment of employees, volunteers, or others by anyone engaged in the work performed on behalf of the VUCC is unethical behavior and will not be tolerated and is grounds for immediate termination of employment or termination of volunteer role at the VUCC.

Requirements for Hiring and Continuing Employment and Volunteerism

The VUCC reserves the right to require current and potential employees and volunteers submit to Washington State Patrol background check, determined by the position for which the individual is applying or volunteering.

Protecting Minors and Vulnerable Individuals

It is the goal of the VUCC to protect employees, volunteers, and all congregants. To help ensure a safe environment that nurtures spiritual growth, employees and volunteers working with minors and vulnerable populations will work in pairs. Additionally, employees and volunteers:

  • Will not be in alone with minors or vulnerable individuals without another employee or volunteer present.

  • Doors are to be unlocked during class and scheduled activities.

  • Are prohibited from accompanying minors or vulnerable individuals to the restroom.

  • When a minor or vulnerable individual needs to use the facilities, the parent/guardian/caretaker should be notified to accompany the minor individual.

  • Prohibited from giving rides to minors or vulnerable individuals without a parent/guardian/or caretaker present.

This policy will be implemented on a case-by-case basis and is subject to review and approval of the Church Council and the Pastor.
