We worship on the unceded traditional territory of the Spokane, Cayuse, Umatilla, Walla Walla, Coeur d’Alene, and other tribes. We acknowledge the history of indigenous genocide, removal, and erasure that continues to this day.  We recognize the role that Christian communities played in these injustices, and we recommit ourselves to seeking more peaceful, just, and neighborly ways of sharing this land with all who call it home.

Call to Confession

One: Seek God; call upon God; God is here. Trusting in the compassion and mercy of God, we pray:

Prayer of Confession

From the Presbyterian Church USA

Forgive us, God, for the many ways that we fail to trust your promise.

Too often we count the trespasses of others, as though we were the ones to judge. Too often we fail to believe that your gifts are freely given. Too often we spend our money for that which is not bread, and our labor for that which does not satisfy. Help us, loving God. Forgive us when we operate out of scarcity and fear rather than out of your abundant, good gifts. Help us to live as your trusting, sharing, reconciling people.

Silent Confessions with God

Assurance of Pardon

(from 2 Corinthians 5)

One: Beloved in Christ: God was in Christ reconciling the world, not counting our wrongs against us, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, anyone in Christ is a new creation! The past is gone; everything has become fresh and new. Hear and believe the

good news of the Gospel:

All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God! Amen.

Opening Hymn

We bring forward rocks that symbolize the barriers and burdens that keep us from embracing God’s steadfast love.

Hymn: I Woke Up This Morning 85 (NCH)

I woke up this morning with my mind Stayed on Jesus, (repeat 2x more),

Hallelu, hallelu, hallelujah.

(repeat 2x more)

Listening for God

Readings from the Candle of Joy (read by Brianna )

Luke 13:1-9, At that very time there were some present who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans?  No, I tell you, but unless you repent you will all perish as they did.  Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the other people living in Jerusalem?  No, I tell you, but unless you repent you will all perish just as they did.”

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it and found none.  So he said to the man working the vineyard, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’  He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it.  If it bears fruit next year, well and good, but if not, you can cut it down.’

Hymn: “God Speak to Me that I may Speak” 531 (NCH)

God, speak to me, that I may speak in living echoes of your tone; as you have sought, so let me seek erring children lost and lone.

O, lead me, God, that I may lead some wanderers along life’s way; O, feed me so that I may feed your hungry ones without delay.

O, fill me with your fullness, God, your overflowing love to know. In glowing word and kindling thought, you love to tell, your praise to show.

O, use me, God, use even me, just as you will, and when, and where, until your blessed face I see, your rest, your joy, your glory share.

Benediction

Go forth into the world in peace. Be of good courage. Hold fast to that

which is good. Render to no one evil for evil. Strengthen the

fainthearted. Support the weak. Help the afflicted. Honor all people.

Love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. The

Grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the

Holy Spirit, be with us all. Amen.

Listening for God

Readings from the Candle of Peace (read by Don and Jan Young)

Luke 13:31-35 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” 32 He said to them, “Go and tell that fox for me, ‘Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. 33 Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.’ 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!35 See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ”

Our Light moves into the World God Loves

Hymn: “Called As Partners In Christ's Service” 495 (NCH)

Called as partners in Christ’s service, called to ministries of grace. We respond with deep commitment fresh new lines of faith to trace. May we learn the art of sharing, side by side and friend with friend, equal partners in our caring to fulfill God’s chosen end.

Christ’s example, Christ’s inspiring, Christ’s clear call to work and worth. Let us follow, never faltering, reconciling folk on earth. Men and women, richer, poorer, all God’s people, young and old, blending human skills together gracious gifts from God unfold.

Thus new patterns for Christ’s mission, in a small or global sense. Help us bear each other’s burdens, breaking down each wall or fence.  Words of comfort, words of vision, words of challenge, said with care, bring new power and strength for action, make us colleagues, free and fair.

So God grant us for tomorrow ways to order human life that surround each person’s sorrow with a calm that conquers strife. Make us partners in our living, our compassion to increase, messengers of faith, thus giving hope and confidence and peace.

Benediction

Go forth into the world in peace. Be of good courage. Hold fast to that

which is good. Render to no one evil for evil. Strengthen the

fainthearted. Support the weak. Help the afflicted. Honor all people.

Love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. The

Call to Our Lenten Confession

One: We are made of stardust and to dust we shall return. Let us return

our lives to God, the maker of the stars, the planets, and every living

creature and know the freedom of living the way of Jesus.

Prayer of Confession

Maker of All, we are yours. Hold us in that love as you reveal to us the

ways we have fallen short of our potential as your children. Heal the

brokenness within us. Heal the brokenness we have caused. Grant to us

hearts ready to make the change and become new through the power of

forgiveness, the freedom of repentance, and the joy of transformation. We

ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Silent Confessions with God

Assurance

One: God forgives us.

All: O Majesty, O Magnificence, O Mystery, come!

Be the hammer, and break our indifference.

Be the sun, and splinter our shadows.

Be the wind, and scatter our despair.

Yea, in the dry country of our souls, let thy grace rain;

so that we take root in thee, and grow.

Make us trees strong in all seasons, bearing fruit,

giving shade to all the weariness

and shelter to them that are lost.

So we pray to the glory of Jesus Christ

who made the cross tree green and flourishing forever.

Amen.

Listening for God

Readings from the Candle of Hope

Luke 4:1-13 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was

led by the Spirit in the wilderness,2 where for forty days he was tested by

the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over

he was famished. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,

command this stone to become a loaf of bread.” 4 Jesus answered him, “It

is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’ ”

5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms

of the world. 6 And the devil said to him, “To you I will give all this authority

and their glory, for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I

please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered

him, “It is written,

‘Worship the Lord your God,

and serve only him.’ ”

9 Then the devil led him to Jerusalem and placed him on the pinnacle of the

temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down

from here, 10 for it is written

‘He will command his angels concerning you,

to protect you,’

11 and

‘On their hands they will bear you up,

so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

12 Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the

test.’ ” 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until

an opportune time.

Jesus, keep me near the cross; there a precious fountain, free to all, a

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever, ‘till my ransomed

soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul, love and mercy found me; there the bright

Near the cross! O, Lamb of God, bring it scenes before me; help me live

from day to day with its shadow o’er me. Refrain

Near the cross I’ll watch and wait, hoping, trusting ever, ‘till I reach the
