(refrain) Passing of the Baton Don Young: Almost four months ago Pastor Gen passed the baton of leadership to Wayne. It was then passed on to Pastor Roger, who then passed it back Wayne. And now we are ready to bring it all full circle. The past few months have been filled with new experiences, and new opportunities for learning and growth, for both our congregation and for Pastor Gen, with the promise of more which is still to come. Wayne Shull: Pastor Gen, on behalf of the whole congregation I stand here this morning ready to return to you the baton of leadership. Welcome home! When you left we used words like “rest” and “renewal.” In truth, as we received your weekly updates, it didn’t sound like there was much “rest” going on, but we trust that the “renewal” you experienced more than made up for it. We know you have much to share with us, and we also have much to share with you. The weeks, and month, and years ahead are full of promise, and we look forward to exploring this new landscape with you. Therefore, I am now prepared to return this baton of leadership into your capable care. Together, may our faithful adventure continue. Congregation: Over the past few months, with God’s help and the mutual support of the many gifted leaders among us, we have explored new possibilities for our life together. We are grateful for our time with Pastor Roger, and we are excited to be reunited with Pastor Gen. Together may we step boldly into the future to which God is calling us. Pastor Gen: Because of the blessings of this congregation’s faith, love, and support along with the award of the Lilly Pastoral Renewal Grant and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I return to you renewed and ready to serve. Along the journey, I experienced a tiny glimmer of what the Apostle Paul might have felt for the Philippian church. He wrote to them I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that God who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philipians 1: 3-6. It is in the Spirit of our partnership in the work of the Gospel that I joyfully receive this baton. May we work together to keep the Spirit’s energy moving us to minister with one another and our wider community. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us, then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” 32 Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which[a] comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Passing the Peace and Welcoming the Light Christ

Hymn: “Gather Us In”

CCLI license #11038266

Here in this place the new light is streaming, shadows of doubt are vanished away. See in this space our fears and our dreamings, brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in, the lost and forsaken. Gather us in, the blind and the lame. Call to us now and we shall awaken. We shall arise at the sound of our name.

We are the young, our lives are a mystery. We are the old who yearn for your face. We have been sung throughout all of history, called to be light to the whole human race. Gather us in, the rich and the haughty. Gather us in, the proud and the strong. Give us a heart so meek and so lowly. Give us the courage to enter the song.

Not just in buildings, small and confining. Not in some heaven light years away. Here in this place the new light is shining. Now is God present, and now is the day. Gather us in and hold us forever. Gather us in and make us your own. Gather us in, all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bones.

The Lord’s Prayer

(translation from the Aramaic by Neil Douglas-Klotz)

O Birther! Father-Mother of the Cosmos, you create all that moves in light.

Focus your light within us – make it useful:as the rays of a beacon show the way.

Create your reign of unity now – through our fiery hearts and willing hands.

Your one desire then acts with ours, as in all light so in all forms.

Grant what we need each day in bread & insight:subsistence for the call of growing life.

Loose the cords of mistakes binding us, as we release the strands we hold of others’ guilt.

Don’t let surface things delude us, but free us from what holds us back.

From you is born all ruling will, the power & the life to do,

the song that beautifies all, from age to age it renews.

Truly – power to these statements –may they be the source from which all my actions grow. Amen.

Listening for God

Scripture

Matthew 28: 16-20

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Passing the Baton of Leadership

The relay continues, and for Team Veradale it is still important to remember that no one person does all of the running. Everyone contributes to the success of the whole team. Sometimes we are running, and sometimes we are resting, but always we are contributing. And now it is time for the baton of leadership to change hands once again.

Wayne: Pastor Roger, three months ago you stepped into a position of leadership among us, and you have faithfully shared your gifts with us in a variety of ways. On behalf of the whole congregation I offer you our deep gratitude for your service with us, and I stand ready to receive back from you the baton of leadership. Next week I will pass it back to Pastor Gen. For now I invite you to “stand down” and go in peace.

Congregation: We are grateful for Pastor Roger’s time among us. These past three months have been fruitful, and will continue to nourish us as we welcome back Pastor Gen to re-engage with us in the ongoing adventure of being the Church God is calling us to be. We wish him well as he steps back into retirement.

Pastor Roger: I continue to be grateful for this opportunity to be with you these past three months. The time has flown by, and in many ways was not nearly long enough. And yet, it has been a time of discovery and exploration, as we opened ourselves in new ways to fresh possibilities for being the Church which God calls us to become. I remain confident that your future is unfolding in exciting and powerful ways, because I know that God has been and continues to be actively present in the midst of you, and you have been and continue to be willing to show up and be the Church together. So it is that I now return this baton of leadership into your capable care. May your faithful adventure continue.

God the still-point of the circle, ’round whom all creation turns. Nothing lost but held forever in God’s gracious arms. (refrain)

Let our hearts touch far horizons, so encompass great and small. Let our loving know no borders, faithful to God’s call. (refrain)

Let the dreams we dream be larger than we’ve ever dreamed before. Let the dream of Christ be in us. Open every door! (refrain)

O God of vision far greater than all human scheming,

Gather us now in your presence, refreshing, redeeming. Show us anew Life in your breath-taking view, lovely beyond all our dreaming.

Pour out Your Spirit on all now assembled before You. May our diversity here be a means to adore You. Women and men, young, old, and youthful again, make us as one, we implore You.

Grant to us insight, O God, for this time of decision. May we dream challenging dreams of both depth and precision. Speak through the dark, dispel by lightning’s bright spark whatever clouds dim our vision.

Break the sun’s rays into color, a rainbow around us. Storm clouds, though real and near, are not enough to confound us. Arched in the sky, beauty and promise are high, giving us hope to astound us.

Listening for God

Scripture

(Genesis 18: 1-5 & 8-15) The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, “My lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” . . . Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. They said to him, “Where is your wife Sarah?” And he said, “There, in the tent.” Then one said, “I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent entrance behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?” The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too wonderful for the Lord? At the set time I will return to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son.” But Sarah denied, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. He said, “Oh yes, you did laugh.”

(Genesis 21: 1-2 & 6) The Lord dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as he had promised. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him . . . Now Sarah said, “God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.” And she said, “Who would ever have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
