The strength of the fire, the taste of salmon, the trail of the sun, and the life that never goes away, they speak to me and my heart soars. Amen By Chief Dan George Listening for God Scripture 1 Samuel 18:1-5 The Message 18 By the time David had finished reporting to Saul, Jonathan was deeply impressed with David—an immediate bond was forged between them. He became totally committed to David. From that point on he would be David’s number-one advocate and friend. 2 Saul received David into his own household that day, no more to return to the home of his father. 3-4 Jonathan, out of his deep love for David, made a covenant with him. He formalized it with solemn gifts: his own royal robe and weapons—armor, sword, bow, and belt. 5 Whatever Saul gave David to do, he did it—and did it well. So well that Saul put him in charge of his military operations. Everybody, both the people in general and Saul’s servants, approved of and admired David’s leadership. Philippians 2 The Message 2 1-4 If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care—then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. 5-8 Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion. 9-11 Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honored him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth—even those long ago dead and buried—will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father. 12-13 What I’m getting at, friends, is that you should simply keep on doing what you’ve done from the beginning. When I was living among you, you lived in responsive obedience. Now that I’m separated from you, keep it up. Better yet, redouble your efforts. Be energetic in your life of salvation, reverent and sensitive before God. That energy is God’s energy, an energy deep within you, God himself willing and working at what will give him the most pleasure. 14-16 Do everything readily and cheerfully—no bickering, no second-guessing allowed! Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God. Carry the light-giving Message into the night so I’ll have good cause to be proud of you on the day that Christ returns. You’ll be living proof that I didn’t go to all this work for nothing. 17-18 Even if I am executed here and now, I’ll rejoice in being an element in the offering of your faith that you make on Christ’s altar, a part of your rejoicing. But turnabout’s fair play—you must join me in my rejoicing. Whatever you do, don’t feel sorry for me. 19-24 I plan (according to Jesus’ plan) to send Timothy to you very soon so he can bring back all the news of you he can gather. Oh, how that will do my heart good! I have no one quite like Timothy. He is loyal, and genuinely concerned for you. Most people around here are looking out for themselves, with little concern for the things of Jesus. But you know yourselves that Timothy’s the real thing. He’s been a devoted son to me as together we’ve delivered the Message. As soon as I see how things are going to fall out for me here, I plan to send him off. And then I’m hoping and praying to be right on his heels 25-27 But for right now, I’m dispatching Epaphroditus, my good friend and companion in my work. You sent him to help me out; now I’m sending him to help you out. He has been wanting in the worst way to get back with you. Especially since recovering from the illness you heard about, he’s been wanting to get back and reassure you that he is just fine. He nearly died, as you know, but God had mercy on him. And not only on him—he had mercy on me, too. His death would have been one huge grief piled on top of all the others. 28-30 So you can see why I’m so delighted to send him on to you. When you see him again, strong and strapping, how you’ll rejoice and how relieved I’ll be. Give him a grand welcome, a joyful embrace! People like him deserve the best you can give. Remember the ministry to me that you started but weren’t able to complete? Well, in the process of finishing up that work, he put his life on the line and nearly died doing it. Message: She’s My Sister, He’s My Brother Silence Holy Communion Wayne: Friends in Christ, we gather at our many tables mindful of the presence of God’s Spirit that is here with us. We seek to honor the request of Jesus given in the scripture. Of all the teachings Jesus gave to our ancestors, this is one he asked them and us to do that we might remember him. When Jesus and his friends sat together at a Passover meal, Jesus took bread; giving God thanks and praise, he broke the bread. He gave it to his friends saying, “Take this all of you and eat of it. This is my body that is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” After the meal had ended, Jesus poured out the cup and again he gave God thanks and praise. He gave the cup to his friends and said, “Take this all of you and drink from it. This is the cup of the new covenant. Do this as often as you drink of it in remembrance of me.” Let us pray. All: Come, Holy Spirit come. Bless this bread and this cup and all who have gathered in your Spirit. Help us to remember that you have dwelt among us. Help us to dwell in the world today as living temples of your presence. Bless us to remember your teachings, commandments, and example. May we be renewed in this sharing. Amen. Silence Prayer of Thanksgiving All: We thank you, God, for your presence as we remember the Living Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, you are among us still, in each of us, and in all of your creation. Bless us to more fully live as your people. Amen. Announcements Our Light moves into the World God Loves Hymn: ““Bind us Together” Bind us together, Lord, bind us together With cords that cannot be broken. Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, Bind us together with love. There is only one God, There is only one King; There is only one Body, That is why we sing: Refrain You are the family of God, You are the promise divine; You are God's chosen desire, You are the glorious new wine. Listening for God

NRSV

Philippians 4:4-9

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about[d] these things. 9 As for the things that you have learned and received and heard and noticed in me, do them, and the God of peace will be with you.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-13 NRSV verses 1-8 and The Message 9-13

For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted;

a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up;

a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance;

a time to throw away stones and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing;

a time to seek and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to throw away;

a time to tear and a time to sew; a time to keep silent and a time to speak;

a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace.

But in the end, does it really make a difference what anyone does? I’ve had a good look at what God has given us to do—busywork, mostly. True, God made everything beautiful in itself and in its time—but he’s left us in the dark, so we can never know what God is up to, whether he’s coming or going. I’ve decided that there’s nothing better to do than go ahead and have a good time and get the most we can out of life. That’s it—eat, drink, and make the most of your job. It’s God’s gift.

What more can he say than to you he has said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? 2 "Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed; for I am your God and will still give you aid; I'll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand. 3 "When through the deep waters I call you to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; for I will be with you, your troubles to bless, and sanctify to you your deepest distress. 4 "When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply; the flame shall not hurt you; I only design your dross to consume and your gold to refine. 5 "The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I'll never, no never, no never forsake." We are standing in his presence on holy ground. Dedication prayer: Great Creator, you call us to a life of prayer and service. Bless these offerings. May they bring the fulfillment of your vision of a day when it is on Earth as it is in Heaven. Amen Listening for God Hebrews12:1-3 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your souls or lose heart. Message: Surrounded by a Cloud of Witnesses Silence Rite of Passing the Baton Worship Team Member: When a relay team runs a race, no one person does all the running. Everyone contributes. Sometimes they are running, and sometimes they are resting, but always they are contributing. And so it is with the Church. Everyone has a contribution to make. For some folks, like the Pastor, their contribution is often out front and very visible, while for others their part is frequently less visible and easier to miss. But just as with the relay team, everyone’s contributions are vital for the success of the whole Church. And that includes times of rest. After seven years it is time for Pastor Gen to “pass the baton” to other members of the team so that she can take some much needed “rest and renewal” time. This is an opportunity for others in the congregation to step up and contribute, perhaps in ways they have never tried before. And the whole Church will be stronger for it! Wayne: Pastor Gen, on behalf of the whole congregation I stand here this morning ready to receive the baton of leadership. You have led us faithfully and well for the past seven years, and we look forward to more years ahead with you as our pastor. But for now we invite you to “stand down” and let us run the race without you for a few months. We will not be on our own in this effort. We have the strength and guidance and inspiration of God’s Spirit. We have the gifts and mutual support and enthusiasm of each other. And we will have the familiar leadership of Pastor Roger. We trust that this will be a fruitful time of growth and new discovery, for you and for us. Congregation: With God’s help and the mutual support of the many gifted leaders among us, we stand ready to rise to the occasion over these next few months as we explore new ways of being the Church together. We are grateful for your ongoing leadership among, and we look forward to your return. For now we say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Go now, with our blessing, to a time of rest.” Pastor Gen: “How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1). We share oneness in our diverse ministries of this blessed community. I give thanks to the God we all serve, the Jesus we follow, and the Spirit who inspires us to live together in unity even when we are apart. While I am away, you are all in my heart. Thank you! This rest and renewal is a blessing filled with promise of things yet unseen. May your time with Pastor Roger renew the ministry that is at the heart of Veradale UCC. May you be filled with the comfort and fire of the Holy Spirit. May we all be united in the gift of this precious time… And now, I pass on this baton to our Moderator. Wayne, thank you for your leadership and love to this congregation and even more for your devotion to our God known to us in the person of Jesus and the work of the Spirit. Thank you for your leadership and for passing this on to Roger during his first Sunday Worship on August 21. Wayne: I accept this symbol of our shared leadership in this journey. I will pass this on to Pastor Roger. We will support him in his guidance and leadership and then return it to you with the delight that comes from knowing ourselves better. We will have much to tell you. So, go with peace, faith, hope, and love! Announcements Our Light moves into the World God Loves Hymn: “Won’t You Let Me Be Your Servant” 539 (NCH) CCLI license #11038266 Won't you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too. We are pilgrims on a journey, we are travelers on the road; we are here to help each other go the mile and bear the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you in the shadow of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear. I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh, I'll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow 'til we've seen this journey through. When we sing to God in heaven we shall find such harmony, born of all we've known together of Christ's love and agony. Won't you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too. Benediction and Love Round Public Domain Love, love, love, love, Christians this is your call.
